Baked Seasoned Tofu recipe

Ingredients:

1 lb of extra-firm tofu, drained and pressed.
1 ¼ cup of water.
¼ cup of soy sauce.
1 tablespoon of fresh ginger, finely chopped.
1 tablespoon of garlic, coarsely chopped.
4 star anises.
¼ teaspoon of crushed red pepper.
Sesame oil.
2 teaspoons of sesame seeds.

Preparation Instructions:

Slice the pressed tofu into half-inch slices. Cut each slice in half to create squares.

Preheat oven to 450°F (230°C).

In a skillet, combine the water, soy sauce, ginger, garlic, star anise and red pepper flakes.

Arrange the tofu pieces in the marinade in one layer. Bring to a boil.

Cover, reduce heat to medium-low and simmer for about 15 minutes.

Brush the bottom of a shallow baking dish with sesame oil.

Remove the tofu from the marinade, brushing off any pieces of garlic or ginger.

Place the tofu on baking sheet, and flip each piece so both sides are coated with the oil.

Sprinkle with 1 teaspoon of the sesame seeds.

Bake, uncovered, for 15-20 minutes or until the top is a deep brown.

Flip over, and sprinkle with the remaining seed.

Bake until the second side is deeply browned (about another 15 minutes).

When cool, the tofu will become firmer.
